The 68-year-old iconic RK Studio, which was founded by legendary actor Raj Kapoor, was gutted in a major fire that fanned out fast and wide on Saturday. There were no casualty, as no shooting was scheduled at the Chembur studio on Saturday. It is suspected that the fire started from the kitchen as there were workers present in the premises.

Work of erecting a studio for a forthcoming dance show was ongoing when the fire broke out. According to the police, a worker who was in the kitchen at the time, saw the fire and tried to douse it with drinking water stored in gallons on the premises. They are now trying to identify him.
The stage 1area, the epicentre of the tragedy, had no CCTV cameras installed and the fire brigade is checking to see if the studio followed all the fire safety norms. Even though fire extinguishers were kept on the premises, no one thought of using them.

"We have asked a report from the fire department as well as Reliance Energy. Investigations are on," said DCP Shahji Umap, Zone 6.
The studio, founded by late actorfilmmaker Raj Kapoor in 1948, was the venue for movies like "Jis Desh Me Ganga Behti Hain" (1960), "Mera Naam Joker" (1970), "Bobby" (1973), "Satyam Shivam Sundaram" (1978), "Prem Rog" (1982) and "Ram Teri Ganga Maili" (1985), which was the founder's last film before his death in June 1988.
The fire destroyed precious memorabilia including costumes worn by every RK heroine, and the most valuable "Mera naam Joker" mask and clothes .
